Ayman Suhrawardy

Hey there, I'm Ayman, a junior in Wayne State's biomedical engineering program. I've always believed in the power of community. I established the first high school MSA in Windsor, the Massey MSA, and even got certified by TED for my Ted-Ed club. Right now, I'm a TA for the engineering department and a Research Assistant in a BME lab, where I'm diving deep into my passion for biomedical engineering. I'm also the Networking and Social Media Chair for the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), which lets me connect with peers who share my dedication. At Wayne State MSA, I'm the social media director, and I'm a Siemens Student Ambassador at WSU, all of which keeps me involved with my community. I'm really into nanotechnology and I'm focusing on nanomedicine to make a difference in medical approaches and diagnostics. Outside of school, I'm all about creating content and working towards becoming an entrepreneur, all while giving back to the community. In my free time, you'll catch me planning my next project, exploring new places, or just hanging out with loved ones – sometimes doing all three at once. My driving forces are technology, community, and innovation, and I'm weaving them together to shape my path and influence those around me.

Projects

Specialized Prosthetic Leg

September 2023 - Present

In our biomedical engineering design lab class, we embarked on a challenging project to design a prosthetic leg tailored for a 19-year-old male with an above-knee amputation, who has a specific and inspiring goal: to be able to kick a soccer ball with his prosthetic limb. This endeavor has required us to combine our knowledge of biomechanics, materials science, and innovative design concepts to create a prosthesis that not only supports the user's mobility but also provides the necessary range of motion, stability, and power for precise and controlled soccer ball kicks. Through meticulous research, design iterations, and collaboration, we are working to turn this ambitious goal into a reality, ensuring that our prosthetic leg design enhances both the physical abilities and quality of life for our user.

Yahtzee Simulation - MATLAB

January 2023 - May 2023

To apply the concepts acquired in my MATLAB class, this project involved simulating a Yahtzee-like game. The game continued indefinitely until five identical numbers were rolled. In addition, a histogram was generated using the data from various functions to visually represent the iterations. This histogram also served as a means to verify the correct functioning of the code. Furthermore, a final report was prepared, which included the histogram, as well as the functions and code scripts, along with explanations detailing the role of each part of the program.

Smart Wheelchair Project

November 2022 - December 2022

In our engineering design class, we embarked on a project to design and prototype a smart wheelchair. Our innovative wheelchair was built upon an Arduino platform and incorporated ultrasonic sensors for efficient obstacle detection and collision avoidance. To bring our vision to life, we meticulously designed the wheelchair and its various components using NX software, harnessing its powerful 3D modeling capabilities. Finally, we employed 3D printing technology to materialize our model wheelchair and its intricately engineered parts, creating a tangible embodiment of our project. During this project I served as the R&D engineer in our group.

October 2023

Siemens Relaize Live Americas

Participated as a mentor in the Siemens Design Hack Challenge at their annual global conference, guiding five student teams through a rigorous innovation process. The project aimed to redesign Andretti Racing’s portable scale pad system used for weighing race cars, focusing on developing a solution that minimized setup time, reduced system weight, and automated the weight measurement process to allow real-time digital transmission of data to an iPad. The challenge encouraged creativity and practical engineering skills, as teams had 48 hours to conceptualize and present their innovative solutions, aiming to significantly enhance the efficiency and functionality of the racing team's existing technology. In addition to mentoring, I led a panel discussion on the vital topic of how academia needs to adapt to changing industry trends, and how the industry can help bridge the gap from school to work, particularly discussing the impact of AI on the academic sphere. This discussion underscored the importance of evolving educational approaches to better equip students with the necessary skills to meet modern engineering challenges, promoting a seamless transition into the professional world and fostering a deeper industry-academia collaboration.
